Campus Safety Update

Dana Community,

I am writing to follow up on recent concerns about school safety and rumors of school threats made by a student. I am happy to report that school police found no evidence to support the threat reported by parents.

As you know, here at Dana the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priority. We have taken numerous steps to address safety concerns about our campus.

  •  We assessed our current campus supervision plan and limited access to our grass field at lunch only to students engaged in organized games.
  • Our campus is monitored by a closed circuit video system.
  • Exterior gates and side doors opened to allow children to enter campus at the start of the school day will continue to be locked after the first bell at 7:40 AM.
  • The district has agreed to incorporate the installation of an electronic access / camera monitoring system at our front entrance into the existing project to install a campus-wide security communication system.

Dana will continue to require campus visitors to check in at the front office and present ID prior to entering the building. After the front entrance security upgrade is installed, all parents will be required to show a photo ID at the door prior to entering the building. We understand this process will delay your entry into the front office but we believe you share our commitment towards providing a safe environment.

We encourage families to engage in a conversation with their children regarding the power of language. Rumors in general are harmful to the wellbeing of our community and can have unexpected ramifications. Please remind your child that rumors can damage the reputation of other students and this type of behavior is not tolerated.

The district’s “See Something, Say Something" initiative encourages students to report information to adults, school administration, or the police. This initiative should not be interpreted as sharing unsubstantiated information with peers via social media, text, or in person. Please make sure your child understands that talking about violent acts, weapons, or controlled substances at school is wrong, even if they are joking with friends. Let your child know school administration will investigate every situation and assign consequences as appropriate.

As a parent, you are encouraged to talk with your student about his or her thoughts and feelings about the incident if the subject comes up.  Our counseling staff is available to support children who feel anxious about their safety. Please do not hesitate to contact our counselors directly. We have provided the following links for families of students struggling with anxiety associated with school safety:

We continue to work with our school police and educators every day to ensure that students have a safe learning environment.

Sincerely,

Scott Irwin - Principal
