Back To School Free Event for Military Families June 30th

Back to School 2021 - Getting Ready for Virtually Anything - Wed June 30th: 8 am-9:00 am PST

Major disruptions occurred to the school year in 2020-21 that resulted in unprecedented educational challenges for students with special needs, their parents, caregivers, teachers, and service providers. In addition to instructional concerns, all involved needed to rapidly develop and enforce a virtual infrastructure that not only supplemented but substituted for quality in-person interactions and engagement. This webinar, presented as a sequel to the “Back to School: Special Needs and Social Distancing” seeks to alleviate some of these concerns and will discuss tips and strategies for effective virtual communication and interactive engagement between parents/caregivers and, school personnel in charge of social distancing and COVID-19 related safety, the student’s teachers and service providers.

Learning Objectives - At the conclusion of this webinar, attendees will receive:

  1. Tips and strategies for effective virtual communication
  2. Suggested key questions to ask and ways to pre-prepare answers related to special needs.
  3. Guidance for preparing comprehensive presentations ahead of a virtual meeting, and,
  4. Access to resources for ongoing technical assistance with a one-pager checklist for future reference.

Dana To Offer Honors Humanities Program 2021-22

Dana and Correia Middle have traditionally offered two strands of humanities-based courses in 5th through 8th grade.

  •  GATE Cluster  — Language Arts and Social Studies classes that provide students with curricular options that modify depth, complexity, acceleration and novelty of the core curriculum.
  • GATE Seminar - Language Arts and Social Studies classes designed to  support students in developing their exceptional potential. The Seminar program was intended to serve varied students who need extraordinarily high-level, advanced and challenging curricular activities; those with extremely high tested ability; or those students who are critical thinkers and "think outside the box.”

The SDUSD GATE Office developed a weighted placement process for identifying students for GATE Cluster and GATE Seminar. The majority of the placement (minimum 83%) was based upon student performance on the CogAT assessment initially administered in 2nd grade. Please follow this link for more information about the SDUSD GATE Placement Criteria.

There are risks associated with categorizing children based upon an individual test score. Our Point Loma Cluster philosophy is that achievement should not precede opportunity,  opportunity should precede achievement. The current 6-8th grade math program at Dana and Correia Middle, and the Honors and Advanced Placement courses at Point Loma High School, reflect these values. Beginning in the fall of 2021, our Honors Humanities program will support these goals.

An informational letter will be emailed to all incoming 5th and 6th grade families during the first week in June. No action needs to be taken at this time.
